Understanding prices, percentages and their denominators

Name the base before applying a percentage

A percentage needs a reference amount. A discount normally applies to an original price, a margin compares profit with selling price, and markup compares profit with cost. The same profit can therefore have different margin and markup percentages without any contradiction.

Tax added to a net amount differs from extracting tax from an inclusive amount. If a gross amount already contains a tax, simply multiplying it by the tax rate does not isolate the included tax. Choose the operation that matches the actual starting price.

Reconcile the parts with the total

Discounted price plus savings should reconstruct the original price when the model includes only that discount. A tip and an equal bill split should use the same definition of the bill amount. Rounding each share can leave a final cent that still needs allocation.

Use the inputs and formula to check whether fees, multiple discounts or taxes are included. The current result covers the selected arithmetic rather than every rule in a transaction or jurisdiction.

Formula and calculation method

Savings=original price×discount/100. Final price=original−savings.
